What a receipt should show
- a receipt number, in sequence;
- the date of payment;
- who received the money and who paid;
- the amount and the currency;
- what it was for;
- the payment method: cash, transfer, check, mobile money;
- a signature, especially for cash.
Receipt or invoice?
An invoice asks for payment; a receipt confirms that payment was received. A paid invoice can serve as proof too: see invoice requirements. For rent, use the rent receipt template.
