How a daily cash sheet works

Expected cash = opening float + cash in − cash out. At closing, count the till and compare. A difference points to a missing sale, a wrong change or an unrecorded payment: note it and its likely cause the same day, while you still remember.

Tips

  • Keep the same float every day, in small notes and coins.
  • Write each cash payment out of the till (small purchases, change fund top-ups) as it happens.
  • Keep card and mobile payments on a separate line or sheet: they don't go in the drawer.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cash float?

The small amount of cash in the till at opening, in change, so you can give change from the first sale.

What if the count doesn't match?

Recount, check the sheet for a missed line, then note the difference and its likely cause. Small differences happen; repeated ones need a closer look.

Do card payments go on the cash sheet?

Keep them separate: they don't change the cash in the drawer.
